Mobile dental clinic in northern Aleppo

clinic The idea behind the mobile dental clinic started after the civilians were displaced from Izaz and the villages around it to Bab Al-Salameh border gate where there was an IDP camp. And as a result to the conflict, most of the dentists left Syria to the neighboring countries and Europe. Dr. Mohanad Kabtour is 36 years old. He is from the city of Izaz in the north countryside of Aleppo. Dr. Kabtour has a Bachelor degree in dentistry from the university of Aleppo. He said that his work in the mobile dental clinic started about five months ago while he was treating patients in the IDP camps before that. “The idea is not new, I treated thousands of patients in the IDP camps using old and very small generator and a plastic chair” Dr. Kabtour said that thousands of doctors migrated from Syria. “there are very few doctors left in Syria. Whoever stayed was subject to harassments and questioning from ISIS who accused me of treating women and took over my clinic with all the equipment in it” He added “the mobile clinic, which was given to me by IDA (independent doctors association) was like a gift from heaven after a long struggle with old equipment. We treat almost 30 patients every day, women, children and men” The mobile clinic is providing treatments such as root canals, cavities, tooth removal and minor surgeries to thousands of IDPs on the Syrian-Turkish borders. Treatment is for free, IDA is covering all the expenses and providing complete support to the clinic. “The most difficult thing that we suffered from was airstrikes which have stopped now and the area is relatively safer, we cover the IDP camps that don’t have dental clinics, especially Rayan and Shamarikh camps in the north countryside of Aleppo” IDA is providing medical equipment and salaries for the team. “Dentistry was affected a lot by the ongoing conflict in Syria. People and dentists were displaced many times so many people have used pain killers as a temporary solution. We are receiving a lot of severely ill neglected cases because of displacements and lack of dentists. Am working in the clinic with one nurse only. Our ambition Is to have other mobile clinics and bigger staff so we can reach all the places that are in need and treat those who were forbidden treatments due to the ongoing war”.
